MASS group exhibition

18 Sep 2024 – 29 Sep 2024

The third in a trilogy of sister shows that included MATERIALITY (2023) at DRAW Space and MATTER (2024) at Woollahra Gallery, MASS continued to cultivate a cohort of ecological mark-makers. Water was the dominant theme that flowed through the exhibition. Each artist responded to the coastal suburb of Curl Curl; from the waterway that stretched from Greendale Creek downstream towards Curl Curl Lagoon and the ocean. MASS responds to the sheer density of our climate crisis.

Artists: Penny Coss, Kristy Gordon, Joyce Lubotzky, Emma Pinsent, Chrystal Rimmer, Brigitta Summers, Sarah Yaacoub, and Mei Zhao. Daniel Press received the 2024 Northern Beaches Emerging Curator Award to develop MASS. Public programs included artist talks and an intertidal walk-shop.

Water is a dominant theme that flows through the exhibition. Each artist responds to the coastal suburb of Curl Curl; from the waterway that stretches from Greendale Creek downstream towards Curl Curl Lagoon and the ocean. Similarly, the group show will be installed in linear stages that start with responses to the groves and suburban entanglements at the entrance, then drifting towards the intertidal zone and ocean. The anthropocentric usage of the area has histories of sand mining, waste disposal, and mitigation of stormwater and sewerage systems.

Each artist has shared research backgrounds immersed in the artist’s bond to the environment. MASS responds to the sheer density of our climate crisis.

Coss responds to the sedimentary layers of human and more-than-human impact on Curl Curl Lagoon.
