The twist of the sea, or ‘Volta Do Mar’ in Portuguese, describes the circular wind and water currents of the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike the monsoons that govern the Indian ocean and change with every season, the winds and currents of Volta Do Mar follow the same direction every day of the year, every season. The trade winds of both hemispheres meet at what is termed the Doldrums. This three-channel video installation takes as its subject the locus of the Fremantle Harbour, conflating the surety of the tidal pattern with that of vulnerability drifting in a maelstrom of doubt.

Commissioned for “UNDERCURRENT 19”, by the Fremantle Biennale.

Tempo Rubato Bloom 2019 three channel video with sound

Tempo rubato , a musical term , is a type of tempo marking, and translated in Italian "stolen time” instructs the performer to freely, expressively speed up or slow down at certain passages. So I’m referencing the unpredictable nature of the southern currents, trying to tie it back to the ocean stains using the same dyes underwater albeit in different conditions. moreover it is a kind of jazz move, referencing algal bloom- its beauty and horror.

Commissioned for “UNDERCURRENT 19”, by the Fremantle Biennale.
