Landscape Stains

The seven works on show at Singapore Artstage 2014 reflect Coss's interest in natural phenomena and encounters with the littoral zones of her local area. Changing topographies give way to waterbodies such as lakes and aquifers that remain hidden underground provide the subject matter for these new works.

Many finished works have a white ‘halo’ or deliberately left raw canvas suggesting an empty space or vehicle for movement into another realm, held suspended without gravity.

Square canvas was rolled out onto the floor of Coss' studio where paint was poured then stained and finally settled and soaked into the canvas weave. Each large work was produced in one day and executed quickly with drying taking up much of the time. The resultant placement of simple forms and the empty paths of space introduce a dialogue between what is on the surface and the possibility of what is beneath and unseen.

Oblique forms released from the weight of conventional perspective; these are paintings of the water and reflections on landscape of an abstract nature.
